Position: Fine Arts Library Summer Undergraduate Student Assistant (Student Wage)

Fine Arts Library Student Assistant

The Fine Arts Library is seeking undergraduate student workers for the summer of 2026. Continuing into the 2026/2027 academic year, if FWS eligible, to assist with library tasks such as providing information services, circulating the collection and assistance with library projects.

Student Library Assistants provide front-line customer service at the Fine Arts Library. They support circulation and information services and assist with library projects.

This position focuses on tasks related to circulation services, such as checking out and discharging library materials and providing information. Student assistants assist with retrieving books, searching for lost items, special projects and occasional shelving. Students interested in this position should be dependable, have excellent attention to detail, and be proactive in helping others. Data entry skills, knowledge of standard office programs, and the ability to work within library guidelines and policies are expected.

Students Assistants will also need to be able to work independently, and to learn the Library of Congress call number system.

Work takes place at an Information and Services Desk, so reliability is essential.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help create a welcoming, informative environment for library patrons by answering basic directional, circulation, and library policy questions.
  • Charge, discharge, renew and retrieve library materials for patrons.
  • Help patrons locate materials in the stacks.
  • Provide basic assistance with printers and other assorted library technology.
  • Record question types and collect statistics at desk though library software.
  • Assist in opening or closing the library during the first or final shifts of the day.
  • Assist in maintaining the orderly appearance of the library.
  • Must work a minimum of 8 hours a week (maximum of 20 hours/week), including weekends and during exam periods.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures.
  • Assist with general library duties as required and special projects as assigned.

This position will start on May 11th, 2026. The position is eligible for renewal. Most library assistants are scheduled to work 8 to 12 hours per week, with the option to pick up dropped shifts. Up to 40 hours during the summer.

Compensation: $14.53/hr.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a current UVA undergraduate student.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and enjoy working with the public.
  • Must be able to provide service to library users (in person or on the telephone) in a courteous, efficient manner.
  • Dependability, accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Willingness and ability to work within an established schedule and the flexibility to cover occasional extra shifts if needed.
  • Commitment to working scheduled shifts and to working no less than 8 hours per week.
  • Being on time for each assigned shift.
  • Ability to use computers and to learn library automation systems.
  • Must be able to push a fully loaded book cart.

1st, 2nd or 3rd years preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
