Heavy Civil Project Manager — Highway​/Road​/Bridge; Virginia - Charlottesville, Virginia

Mission Hires is partnering with a confidential, well-established self‑perform heavy civil contractor to hire a Heavy Civil Project Manager to run roadway, highway, and bridge projects across central and western Virginia. This is a direct‑hire role with full benefits, strong backlog, and real P&L ownership, the PM carries budget, schedule, and margin on their own projects and reports directly to senior leadership.

What You’ll Own

The Project Manager owns the job from plan through closeout and is accountable for delivery on time, on budget, and built right.

• Manage heavy highway, road, bridge, and civil infrastructure projects from planning through closeout
• Own schedule, budget, cost control, forecasting, change orders, documentation, and project closeout
• Protect projected margins by submitting accurate, timely cost and income projections and acting on variances
• Serve as the main project contact for owners, agencies, subcontractors, and vendors
• Lead field supervision and project engineering teams; set clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations
• Identify project risks early and drive solutions before they become larger issues
• Protect the company’s position on contract changes, claims, documentation, and owner communication
• Own quality control — review designs against engineering principles, company standards, and contract requirements
• Maintain a strong safety, quality, and production culture across the project (Incident & Injury Free)
• Issue subcontracts and purchase orders and manage subcontractor performance
• Run regular project meetings (schedule and cost review); track and report project performance accurately to leadership
• Submit accurate and timely payment requisitions and know when to escalation issues to leadership

• 5–10+ years managing heavy/highway, roadway, or bridge civil construction projects
• Proven experience running medium-to-large heavy civil projects as a Project Manager (not an entry‑level role)
• Strong DOT / VDOT, roadway, bridge, grading, drainage, paving, or utility background
• Demonstrated strength in cost control, scheduling, contracts, and change order management
• Ability to build strong relationships and manage owners, agencies, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred
• OSHA 30 certification preferred
• Experience with Heavy Job, Bluebeam, and Primavera P6 preferred
• Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Compensation & Benefits

• $140,000 – $180,000 base salary, depending on experience, plus bonus opportunity
