Position Overview
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a highly qualified Pediatric Transplant Cardiologist to join the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. This is a full-time, open-rank faculty position on the clinical or tenure track, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
We are seeking a collaborative and academically driven physician with advanced expertise in pediatric heart failure, transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support (MCS). The successful candidate will join a growing, high-performing transplant and congenital heart program and play a key leadership role in the continued expansion of our regional and national presence.
Program Highlights
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology currently includes 13 cardiologists representing a broad range of subspecialty expertise, including:
Heart Failure, Transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support
Pulmonary Hypertension
Interventional Cardiology
Advanced Cardiac Imaging
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Electrophysiology
At the time of hire, three dedicated faculty members will provide heart failure/transplant/MCS coverage, with whom the candidate will share inpatient and outpatient responsibilities.
Additional program strengths include:
Two dedicated congenital heart surgeons with excellent risk-adjusted outcomes
Approximately 10 pediatric cardiac transplants performed annually
Active and expanding mechanical circulatory support program
Leadership institution of the Virginia Congenital Cardiac Consortium (three-institution collaborative directing highest-complexity cases to UVA)
Consistent Top 50 national ranking in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report
The UVA Children's Hospital is fully integrated within the academic medical center, providing robust multidisciplinary collaboration and strong institutional support for clinical innovation and research.
Clinical Responsibilities
Inpatient and outpatient management of pediatric heart failure, transplant, and MCS patients
Participation in shared transplant and MCS call coverage
General pediatric cardiology inpatient and outpatient service coverage
Development and expansion of regional outreach clinics in heart failure, transplantation, and cardiomyopathy (expected by year two)
Active engagement in quality improvement, program development, and multidisciplinary transplant initiatives
Academic Expectations
As an academic medical center, UVA values excellence in:

Leadership within institutional and national transplant organizations
Faculty rank and track will be determined based on experience, academic productivity, and leadership qualifications.
Required Qualifications
MD, DO, or equivalent degree
Board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Cardiology
Completion of at least one additional year of formal training in Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support
Eligibility for recognition as a transplant physician by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)
Minimum of five years of attending-level experience in pediatric heart failure/transplantation
Demonstrated experience in high-performing congenital heart surgery and transplant programs strongly preferred
