Position Summary

St. Anne’s-Belfield School seeks a dynamic, full-time Humanities teacher and advisor to join a highly collaborative department. The ideal candidate is a scholar-practitioner capable of bridging the gap between History and English, with a specific focus on our interdisciplinary American Studies curriculum. This is a 10-month position (paid over 12 months) for the  school year, beginning August 1, 2026 and ending July 31, 2027.

Academic Program
  • Grade 9: English and History are taught in separate classes, and the teaching team coordinates how our writing curriculum spirals through the courses.
  • Grades 10 & 11: Humanities 10 and American Studies classes are taught in a dual-credit class that provides an English credit and a History credit. Team teaching is frequently employed.
  • Grade 12: English is taught separately from History.
Candidate Profile:
American Studies & Literature Focus
  • Integrated Expertise: Experience teaching American Literature and American History, with the ability to weave together historical and literary analysis.
  • Discussion-Based Pedagogy: A strong mastery of student-centered, discussion-based teaching methods (e.g., Harkness method, Socratic seminar). The teacher must be comfortable facilitating complex conversations where students engage directly with texts and one another.
  • The Teaching of Literature: A sophisticated approach to literary instruction.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A willingness to embrace a team-teaching model and coordinate daily with colleagues to align the content of skills of the course.
  • Plan and teach classes in the Upper School Humanities department, specifically within the American Studies sequence.
  • Utilize a Standards-Based Learning (SBL) framework to provide clear, actionable feedback on student writing and critical thinking skills.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, monitoring their academic progress and well-being.
  • Integrate technology in meaningful ways to enhance the study of the humanities.
