Summary: An Instructional Assistant for Special Education supports the classroom teacher in managing and instructing students with disabilities. The assistant performs clerical, instructional, and human support tasks under the teacher’s supervision, and may independently execute certain instructional program activities while sharing outcomes and data.
Essential Functions- Follow and implement instructional plans and, when appropriate, the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Assist students individually and in groups to reinforce learning concepts.
- Administer tests, homework, and make‑up work as directed by the teacher.
- Develop and maintain a pleasant, orderly classroom environment.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate classroom behavior and control; assign discipline as directed.
- Support the teacher in related instructional activities such as field trips, library visits, and assembly events.
- Assist in the physical movement of students between learning environments.
- Perform attendance recording and collection of lunch monies as directed.
- Conduct clerical duties including typing, filing, and duplication.
- Supervise students during cafeteria, lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods.
- Assist in maintaining student records as directed.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Provide toileting, feeding, positioning, and health‑related support, including specialized procedures such as catheterization and gastrointestinalings.
- Assist with carry‑over services such as occupational, physical, and speech therapy.
Proficiency in basic language arts and math; excellent written and oral communication; ability to perform multiple non‑technical tasks and upgrade skills as needed; knowledge of school policies, procedures, and effective discipline; familiarity with age‑appropriate activities; strong safety practices; ability to work with diverse groups; problem‑solving skills; confidentiality; teamwork; empathy toward students with disabilities; willingness to learn specialized instructional techniques.
Education and/or ExperienceCompletion of at least 60 hours of college credit or an associate’s degree or higher, or successful passage of the Para Pro Assessment.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork predominantly in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, recreational areas). Must lift up to 40 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform fine dexterity tasks. Work distribution: 50% sitting, 25% walking, 25% standing. Occasional field‑trip travel and extended meetings may be required.

Salary: $19.50 to $30.23 per hour
