Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional, Special Education Teacher
The Teacher Education Program in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at the School of Education and Human Development is seeking University Student Teacher Supervisors (USTS) with extensive teaching or supervision experience to provide supervision to student teachers in multiple teacher licensure programs in their clinical placements located in Charlottesville and Albemarle County-area public schools.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate meetings with mentor teacher/student teacher pairs.
- Conduct in‑person and video observation cycles (3 in the fall semester and 5 in the spring semester) using a web‑based video observation tool.
- Communicate students’ progress to the Teacher Education faculty and staff.
- Use the web‑based observation tool and learn and use new technologies.
- Provide additional coaching and support to students if needed.
- Communicate regularly with academic program coordinators and seminar instructors.
- Attend a paid training day in the summer at UVA and virtual follow‑up meetings during the year.
- Travel for up to three in‑person meetings per semester and receive mileage reimbursement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree preferred. - At least three years full‑time experience teaching PreK‑12 students in public schools.
- Knowledge of current best practices in education.
- Current or previously held professional teaching license.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience mentoring student teachers and working with novice teachers.
- Comfortable with frequent email, text, and Zoom check‑ins.
- Proficiency with learning assessment and management systems and other technology platforms.
- High‑speed internet access and personal tablets or computers with video streaming capability.
- Ability to respond to email or text inquiries within 24 hours.
- Preference for candidates in the Charlottesville City/Albemarle County area to minimize travel time and expenses.
Compensation and
Work Hours:
- Pay: $287 per student for coaching fall Internship I students; $575 per student for coaching spring Internship II students.
- Limited to 1500 hours of work in a year.
- Wage position; not eligible for leave or other benefits.
- Vacancy for training day; mileage reimbursement for up to three meetings per semester.

- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
