Special Education Assistant II (Autism Base) – Agnor Primary School – 2026-27 School Year
The Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs. Responsibilities include implementing plans for instruction, monitoring student behavior, documenting activities and progress, and supporting students’ IEP goals. The role works closely with classroom teachers to provide extended classroom support, model evidence‑based behavior intervention strategies, assist with data collection and analysis, and serve as a resource for equitable opportunities for students with challenging behaviors.
All work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher, though the aide may independently carry out particular aspects of the instructional program that may involve activities outside the normal school facility.
- Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment, including instructional materials and bulletin boards.
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Lead or facilitate teaching of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole‑class instruction.
- Carry out instructional plans designated by the classroom teacher and the student’s Individual Education Plan.
- Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Assist individual students in following routines, directions, and schedules, ensuring compliance with the daily IEP schedule.
- Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Assist in developing and implementing individual student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, and behavior management plans.
- Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
- Coordinate school and home supports and work tasks.
- Facilitate data collection and accommodations as required by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
- Communicate effectively with special education teachers to help achieve IEP goals.
- Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth, and a willingness to contribute to a team approach.
- Assist in maintaining student records, collecting lunch money, and related instructional activities such as field trips, library, and assembly.
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplication at the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Introduce and model research‑based interventions for staff.
- Implement behavior curriculum in collaboration with specialists and school staff.
- Provide transition plans and support for students moving between educational settings.
- Develop effective intervention and crisis/safety plans with specialists and staff.
- Supervise and train students during lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods.
- Maintain a notebook of weekly behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skill lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
- Assist students with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, diaper changes, and positioning.
- Assist students with deregulation issues.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Perform medical‑related duties such as catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, and assistive breathing device management.
- Assist with carry‑over services such as OT, PT, speech, adapted PE, and vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students; willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques; effective communication and relationship building with students, parents, and staff; high school graduation or equivalent; willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Education And ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, including basic keyboard and filing training, that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Physical Conditions And Nature Of WorkDuties are performed in classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Work requires frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 pounds, occasional travel on field trips, moving students by wheelchair, and personal hygiene tasks. Training and immunization against blood‑borne pathogens may be required. Duties include occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds, attending conferences or training beyond normal hours, and working under stressful conditions.
The role involves continuous physical contact and awareness of students’ medical needs.
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities described above.
