GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
The Coordinator of School Counseling and Wellness provides strategic leadership for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of Albemarle County Public Schools’ comprehensive student support framework, integrating school counseling, social-emotional learning (SEL), mental health and wellness, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This role ensures alignment across academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports to promote equitable outcomes for all students. The Coordinator leads division-wide systems that support schools in implementing a Multi‑Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and a whole-child approach, ensuring coherence, reducing fragmentation, and strengthening outcomes across schools.
The Coordinator serves as a key liaison among central office departments, school leaders, and community partners to ensure that student support services and college and career readiness initiatives are coordinated, data‑informed, and responsive to student needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Leads the integration of school counseling, SEL, mental health and AVID into a coherent division-wide student support systems;
- Ensures alignment of all student support and college readiness initiatives with the division’s strategic plan and equity priorities;
- Develops and monitors implemntation of comprehensive K-12 student support model (MTSS-aligned);
- Reduces duplication across initiatives and ensures clear, streamlined guidance to schools;
- Supports school counselors by providing guidance, coaching and professional learning;
- Ensures counseling programs address academic achievement, social development, and postsecondary planning;
- Facilitates counselor collaboration through professional learning communities and division meetings;
- Provides tools and resources to support student academic and career planning;
- Oversees development and implementation of division-wide SEL and mental health frameworks;
- Supports schools in implementing Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 supports;
- Collaborates with student services and community partners to strengthen mental health supports;
- Promotes practices that foster student well-being and positive school climates;
- Provides division-level leadership for the AVID program, ensuring fidelity to the AVID model;
- Supports schools in implementing AVID strategies that promotes college readiness, academic rigor and student agency and organization;
