Salary: $21.26 – $32.95 per hour
Contract Length: 189 Days
Essential Functions- Assists students, individually or in groups, with developmental and pre‑academic needs.
- Supports special education students in the general education environment.
- Collects data on IEP goals and progress as directed by the classroom teacher or case manager.
- Implements, under the supervision of a classroom teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans to improve student success.
- Communicates with students using multiple approaches, including repetition, verbal and visual tools (pictures/symbols, objects, communication board, words, signs).
- Provides and supports students’ use of accommodations for physical, language, and developmental disabilities.
- Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and students’ files/records to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
- Monitors students (e.g., classroom, library, lunch room, playground, field trips, hallways, to/from bus) to identify required assistance, reinforce appropriate behavior and social skills, and ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs record keeping and general clerical functions to support the teacher and provide necessary records/materials.
- After appropriate training, supports students with basic toileting, medical needs, and physical needs.
- After appropriate training, supports students with behavioral and emotional needs, de‑escalates situations using respectful techniques, and reliably documents incidents.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
Skills required include operating standard office equipment, using pertinent software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records. Knowledge required includes basic math (fractions, percents, ratios), reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, and understanding complex multi‑step written and oral instructions. Ability required includes scheduling activities, collecting and collating data, using job‑related equipment, working with diverse individuals, problem‑solving, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, working as part of a team, and handling constant interruptions.
Education and/or ExperienceMust have completed at least 60 hours of college credit or earned an associate’s degree or higher, or successfully passed the Para Pro Assessment (Virginia qualifying score of 455).
Working EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, significant fine finger dexterity, and hygiene‑related tasks for students with disabilities. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions in a clean atmosphere.
EvaluationThe LEAP Instructional Assistant is evaluated by the school administration.
