Job DescriptionAlbemarle County Public Schools offers a supportive environment focused on high‑quality instruction for all students. This role supports the classroom teacher in delivering instruction and services to students with special needs, particularly those on the autism spectrum.
General Definition of WorkThe Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program. Responsibilities include supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs, implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior, documenting progress, and supporting IEP goals. The aide may independently carry out specific instructional tasks and assist students with learning and general daily living skills.
Essential Functions- Develop and maintain a pleasant classroom environment.
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Lead or facilitate instruction for individuals or small groups.
- Carry out instructional plans and IEPs.
- Maintain student training data and behavior logs.
- Provide support for toileting, feeding, and other daily living skills.
- Assist with data collection, accommodations, and communication with teachers, parents, and specialists.
- Provide direct support to staff and students by modeling evidence‑based interventions.
- Mobility support, including moving students via wheelchairs and other devices.
- Assist with medical‑related duties such as catheterization, feeding, and breathing devices.
- Assist with transition and crisis safety plans.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and bookkeeping.
- Supervise and train students in supervised settings.
- Assist with medical and daily living services as directed.
Skills and Abilities
- Empathetic attitude toward students with disabilities.
- Ability to learn specialized instructional and management techniques.
- Strong communication and relationship‑building skills with students, parents, and staff.
- High‑school graduate or equivalent; willing to obtain or maintain CPR certification.
High‑school equivalence, including basic keyboard and filing training. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position is acceptable.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work ContactsWork in classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 pounds, and assistance with mobility of disabled students. Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds, field‑trip travel, and after‑hour duties may be required. Comfort with personal hygiene assistance and exposure to blood‑borne pathogens is required. The role involves close personal contact with children and may include exposure to physical and emotional outbursts.
EvaluationPerformance is evaluated on the ability to effectively carry out the above responsibilities.
Job Requirements- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
- Language skills: proficiency in English.
Position Type: Full‑time
Salary: $19.51 to $24 per hour
