Candidate Credentials- Adapted physical education specialist (state physical education teaching license plus graduate training in adapted physical education)
- General physical education specialist (state physical education teaching license)
- Special education teacher (state special education license in a specific disability area)
- State teaching license in physical education or special education with the relevant endorsement.
- Experience planning and delivering adapted physical education instruction.
- Ability to develop and implement Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing special education.
- Excellent communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Provide direct instructional services using evidence-based practices in a variety of settings for students with disabilities based on their IEPs.
- Assess student abilities in relation to goals, objectives, outcomes, and disability or impairment.
- Promote positive behavior of learners in instructional settings and assist in the management of student behavior throughout the school.
- Collaborate with the general education teacher to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, ensure accommodations and modifications, provide curriculum coordination, and evaluate student progress.
- Participate in or chair eligibility, IEP, and triennial meetings.
- Plan, integrate, and utilize assistive technology for classroom instruction.
- Communicate essential teacher and paraprofessional accommodations before the first day of class.
- Communicate with parents of caseload students regularly, responding to emails and phone calls promptly.
- Participate in staff, department, and school-wide committee meetings and PLCs as required.
- Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals and/or volunteers.
- Adhere to federal, state, and local laws governing education of students with disabilities.
- Perform related duties as assigned by administration in accordance with school and system policies.
Provide classroom instruction, assess and support students with disabilities, collaborate with peers, manage behavior, use assistive technology, and perform administrative and compliance duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesUnderstand theoretical and practical aspects of effective instruction and positive behavioral supports for students with disabilities; apply ACPS curriculum and instructional techniques; evaluate and treat behavioral and affective disorders; work effectively with administrators, colleagues, staff, students, parents, and community members; maintain strong verbal and written communication in English.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkPerform duties in classrooms, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, community and recreational areas. Daily close contact with students, frequent speaking, standing, walking, reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Must respond to the unique educational needs of students with disabilities in stressful settings.
