Special Education Teacher:
Generalist

Key Responsibilities- Provide direct instructional services using evidence‑based practices to students with disabilities based on Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
- Assess student abilities and progress toward goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Promote positive behavior and manage student behavior within and beyond instructional settings.
- Collaborate with general‑education classroom teachers to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, ensure implementation of required accommodations and modifications, and coordinate curriculum.
- Participate in or chair eligibility, IEP, and triennial meetings.
- Plan, integrate, and utilize assistive technology/technology for classroom instruction.
- Communicate accommodations and required supports to teachers and paraprofessionals prior to first day of class.
- Communicate regularly with parents, responding to emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
- Participate in staff, department, and school‑wide committee meetings/PLCs as required.
- Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals or volunteers.
- Adhere to and demonstrate knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing special education.
- Perform related duties as assigned by administration in accordance with school policies.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of instructional principles, behavioral supports, ACPS curriculum and instructional techniques, human behavior and development, learning and motivation, assessment and treatment of behavioral/affective disorders, and relevant policies. Ability to provide positive behavioral support in group and individual settings, work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office staff, students, parents, and community members, and exhibit excellent human relations skills.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and eligibility for a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsement in School Counseling (or as required).
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience providing education to students with special education designations such as Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, and high-functioning Autism.
- Ability to serve as a case manager and maintain a safe and supportive environment.
Duties are performed in school settings including classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, community and recreational areas. Requires frequent contact with students, staff, and parents; standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and handling up to 50 pounds. Requires good vision. Must be able to respond to the unique educational needs of students with disabilities in a stressful setting.
