Job DescriptionTeach, Lead, Inspire as the Special Education Teacher:
Generalist at Walton Middle School. You will provide instruction and support to students with Special Education designations, ensuring they can participate successfully in the general education classroom. You will serve as case manager, work collaboratively with general education teachers, and partner with families and staff to meet individual student needs.

Walton Middle School is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. The area offers outdoor recreation, cultural events, and close proximity to Washington, DC, Richmond, and the Chesapeake Bay.
Essential Functions- Provide direct instructional services using evidence‑based practices in settings aligned with students’ IEPs.
- Assess student abilities relative to IEP goals and objectives.
- Promote positive behavior and collaborate on behavior management across the school.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to assess program effectiveness, recommend strategies, and ensure IEP accommodations and modifications are implemented.
- Participate in or chair eligibility, IEP, and triennial meetings.
- Plan, integrate, and utilize assistive technology for classroom instruction.
- Communicate required accommodations to essential teachers and paraprofessionals before the first day of class.
- Maintain regular communication with parents of caseload students.
- Participate in staff, departmental, and school‑wide meetings/PLCs.
- Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals or volunteers.
- Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing special education services.
- Perform related duties as assigned by administration in accordance with policies.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of curriculum and instructional techniques for students with disabilities, human behavior and development, assessment and behavioral support strategies, and ACPS policies. Ability to provide positive behavioral support in individual and group settings, work effectively with staff, students, parents, and community members, and possess strong human relations and communication skills.
Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Special Education and eligibility for a Virginia teaching certificate. Master’s degree preferred.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork typically in classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and community areas. Requires frequent close contact with students, staff, and parents, occasional contact with medical professionals, frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires good vision and ability to manage stressful situations, including intervention with aggressive or self‑abusive students.
