Job DescriptionSpecial Education Assistant II – Autism Base
The role supports instruction for students with special needs, assists in implementing instruction plans, monitors behavior, documents activities and progress, and supports students’ IEP goals.
Essential Functions- Develop and maintain an orderly classroom environment
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers
- Lead and/or facilitate teaching of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class instruction
- Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, if appropriate, the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
- Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures
- Assist individual students to follow routines and schedules, adhering to daily plans as required by the IEP
- Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment
- Assist in the development and implementation of individual student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans
- Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities
- Coordinate school and home supports and work tasks
- Collect data and facilitate accommodations as required by the classroom teacher or supervisor
- Communicate effectively with the special education teacher to help facilitate the IEP goals of students
- Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute to a team approach to the educational program
- Assist in maintaining students’ records, collecting lunch monies, and related instructional activities such as field trips, library, and assembly
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating at the direction of the classroom teacher
- Provide direct support to staff and students by modeling evidence‑based interventions and curriculum
- Coordinate with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum and crisis/safety plans
- Assist in transition planning for students moving between educational settings
- Supervise and train students during lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods as directed by the classroom teacher
- Maintain a notebook for weekly behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skill lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs
- Assist students with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, diaper changes, and positioning
- Assist with deregulated students and medical‑related duties such as catheterization, gastrointestinal feeds, assistive breathing devices, colostomy, and ileostomy needs
- Assist with carry‑over of related services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, adapted physical education, and vision
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal
Skills and Abilities
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques; effective communication with students, parents, and staff; high‑school graduate or equivalent; CPR certification required.
Education and ExperienceHigh‑school graduate or equivalent; basic keyboard and filing training.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork in classrooms, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 lbs. Occasional travel on field trips. Handling wheelchairs and other mechanical devices. Personal hygiene duties for disabled students including changing catheters, diapers, and clothing. Immunization against blood‑borne pathogens. Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs. Flexibility in hours and the ability to work under stressful conditions.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities listed above.
