Job Summary
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Special Education at Walton Middle School, Charlottesville, Virginia (2026‑27 school year). The CNA provides medical support to students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and performs related health tasks under the supervision of the classroom teacher and the school’s registered nurse.
Key Responsibilities- Ride transportation for field trips and activities.
- Implement and monitor tube feeding protocol.
- Assist staff with hygiene protocols, including diapering, toileting and transferring students.
- Assist with alternative communication device protocol.
- Follow student IEPs, IHPs and emergency procedures.
- Record vital signs, monitor neurological and respiratory status.
- Assist with positioning, feeding and other medical duties (e.g., catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices).
- Prepare and maintain classroom, bathroom and medical areas.
- Assist with classroom instruction and behavioral management under direction of the special education teacher.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing and copying.
- Participate in team meetings and assist with carry‑over of related services.
- Carries out instruction plans specified by the special education teacher and student’s IEP.
- Maintains training data and records as required.
- Undergoes training for medical procedures assigned to students.
- Records vital signs and reports abnormal results.
- Responds to medical emergencies such as seizures with first‑aid measures.
- Assists with toileting, feeding, positioning and hygiene.
- Maintains cleanliness and safety of school areas.
- Supports behavior management programs.
- Provides physical assistance for student movement between learning environments.
- Performs attendance and lunch money collection as directed.
- Supervises students during non‑instructional periods.
- Maintains confidentiality and records per policy.
- Empathetic working attitude toward disabled students.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional techniques.
- Sound judgment and effective communication with students, parents and staff.
- Basic computer and clerical skills.
- Maintenance of strict confidentiality.
- High‑school graduation or equivalent.
- Minimum one (1) year experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
- Experience in caring for children with special health needs preferred.
- CNA credentials and certification in First Aid and CPR required.
- Frequent walking, standing and lifting up to 80 pounds.
- May travel with students on field trips.
- Work requires close contact with students and other staff.
- Personal hygiene assistance for students (catheters, diapers, clothing).
- Training and immunization against blood‑borne pathogens required.
Performance will be evaluated based on effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
Job Requirements- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
- Full‑time position.
- Salary: $18 to $21.50 per hour.
