We are seeking an assistant to support the instructional program for students with special needs. The assistant will aid in supervising, caring for, and instructing students, monitor behavior, document progress, and support students’ IEP goals. Responsibilities include providing classroom support, modeling evidence-based interventions, data collection, communication with teachers and specialists, and maintaining student records.
Essential Functions- Develop and maintain an orderly classroom environment.
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by teachers.
- Lead or facilitate teaching for individuals and groups.
- Carry out instructional plans and IEPs as designated.
- Maintain student training data and behavioral logs.
- Assist students with routines, schedules, and daily tasks.
- Operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Support sensory programs, motor activities, and behavior plans.
- Provide alternative activities for independent work.
- Coordinate school and home supports.
- Collect and analyze data, facilitate accommodations, and communicate needs.
- Model research‑based interventions for staff and students.
- Assist with crisis and safety plans and transition planning.
- Supervise students during lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods.
- Maintain a notebook of behavior logs, BIPs, social skill plans, and incident reports.
- Assist with daily living skills (toileting, feeding, dressing, etc.).
- Participate in team meetings.
- Assist with medical‑related duties such as catheterization and feeding.
- Support carry‑over of related services (OT, PT, speech, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
• Emphasis on empathetic work with disabled or handicapped students.
• Ability to learn specialized instructional and management techniques.
• Effective communication and relationship building with students, parents, and staff.
• High school graduate or equivalent; willing to obtain CPR certification.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training, is acceptable.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, recreation). Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (up to 80 lb), and moving students in wheelchairs or on mechanical devices. Personal hygiene assistance, medical‑related duties, and surface hygiene precautions. Occasional travel on field trips and after‑hour work may be required.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.
