Teaching Assistant (Kindergarten)
Part‑time, 4.5 hours per day for the 2026‑27 school year at Baker‑Butler Elementary School, Albemarle County Public Schools.

Qualified candidates will assist the classroom teacher in managing and instructing students while maintaining a supportive classroom environment. The role requires flexibility, empathy for students with disabilities, and willingness to perform a variety of instructional and administrative tasks.
General Definition Of WorkProvide responsible administrative, clerical, and human support to the classroom teacher in managing and instructing students. Perform tasks as directed under the teacher’s supervision, including independent instructional activities outside the normal school facility.
Essential Functions- Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, when applicable, the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Carry out follow‑up and review lessons.
- Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment, including maintaining instructional materials, designing bulletin boards, and assisting in clean‑up activities.
- Assist the teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom behavior and control.
- With the teacher’s approval, carry out appropriate discipline of students.
- Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in related instructional activities such as field trips, library visits, and assemblies.
- Assist in physically moving students from one learning environment to another.
- Record attendance and collect lunch monies as directed by the teacher.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplication at the teacher’s direction.
- Supervise students in the lunchroom or during lunch periods.
- Supervise students during free time and other non‑instructional periods.
- With the teacher or principal, assist in maintaining students’ records.
- Assist with toileting, feeding, and positioning of students.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Assist with medical‑related duties such as catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy, and ileostomy needs.
- Assist with carry‑over of related services, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, adapted physical education, and vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
Develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; be willing to learn specialized instructional and management techniques used with disabled students. Communicate effectively and build working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Possess high‑school graduation (or equivalent) and a willingness to obtain and maintain CPR certification.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork is performed in typical school settings (classroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, recreation areas). Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, and occasional travel on field trips are required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices, and lifting equipment such as audio‑visuals up to 50 pounds may occur. Additional duties may include attendance at parent conferences, building‑level meetings, and division‑wide training beyond normal hours.
Daily close contact with children for classroom management is required. Regular contact with staff, parents, and medical professionals may be required. Community and division contacts may demand tact and diplomacy.
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.
