GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Responsible for diagnosing speech and language disorders and for providing professional services to students through assessment, planning, goal development, and provision of appropriate intervention services designed to enable students to access the general education curriculum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Response to Intervention and participate in school team planning and implementation of interventions at all tier levels according to student need.
  • Assess, screen, and evaluate students; share results with parents and educational staff and participate in the eligibility determination process in accordance with state and division requirements.
  • Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with Speech/Language Impairment and assist with IEPs for students with speech/language as a related service on an annual basis or per requirements.
  • Conduct hearing screenings according to state regulations and division policy.
  • Comply with all Medicaid requirements for school‑based claiming, including obtaining written Medicaid consent from parents of all students served and timely filing of claims meeting Medicaid standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development and individual student needs by providing relevant instruction according to the IEP, Personalized Learning Plan, and educational best practices.
  • Develop and maintain a physical environment and psychological climate in the classroom conducive to effective student learning.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Conduct instructional sessions using materials, techniques, and resources in accordance with school division curriculum, special education policies, and recommended best practices.
  • Provide consultative services for school staff by sharing and demonstrating specific techniques and working with school teams to facilitate consistent interventions for targeted students.
  • Establish a system of documentation that is measurable, accountable, and conforms to state and division policy.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations, and maintain responsibility for student discipline and safety.
  • Maintain records and information concerning individual students in a prescribed confidential manner, using records only for purposes for which they are maintained, in accordance with FERPA guidelines.
  • Attend meetings and staff development as requested by the principal and Department of Special Services.
  • Arrange purchase of necessary instructional supplies for speech and language services and maintain an inventory of supplies.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships with administrative and school staff.
  • Follow required policies and procedures outlined in the Special Education Procedure Manual.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by administration in accordance with division policies and procedures.
