Job DescriptionSubstitute Teachers in Albemarle County Public Schools educate, lead, and inspire students across all schools. This role offers competitive daily pay of $140, flexible scheduling, and the opportunity to gain classroom experience for future teaching careers.

- Deliver the lesson plan created by the classroom teacher
- Meet and instruct students in the designated locations and times
- Maintain a conducive physical learning environment within resource limits
- Prepare for assigned classes and provide evidence of preparation upon request
- Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of behavior
- Provide an effective program of instruction, including:
- Instructional skills
- Knowledge of child growth and development
- Use of materials and resources in accordance with adopted curriculum
- Demonstration of mastery of content area
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Uphold school and county policies and procedures
- Maintain required records
- Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules
- Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes within contractual commitments
- Cooperate with staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods
- Assist in selecting instructional materials, books, equipment, etc.
- Maintain open communication with students, parents, and colleagues about academic and behavioral progress
- Establish and maintain cooperative professional relations with others
- Perform related duties assigned by administration in accordance with policies and practices
Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Priority is given to those with prior teaching experience and eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License. For long‑term substitute positions, a teaching certification in the relevant subject/grade level is required.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkDuties are performed in schools: classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums, recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, occasional field‑trip travel, and moving students or equipment are required.
