General Definition of WorkThe Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program, supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs. Responsibilities include assisting in implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior, documenting progress, and supporting students’ IEP goals. The assistant offers extended classroom support, models evidence‑based behavior interventions, collects and analyzes data, and ensures fidelity of behavior interventions. All work is performed under the direction of the classroom teacher and may include activities outside the normal school facility.
EssentialFunctions
- Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment.
- Assists students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Leads and/or facilitates teaching for individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class settings.
- Carries out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, when appropriate, the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Maintains student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Enforces routines and schedules to support students’ IEP and daily activities.
- Procures, sets up, and operates audio‑visual equipment.
- Co‑plans and implements individual student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, trial drills, and behavior management plans.
- Creates alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed tasks.
- Coordinates school and home supports and related tasks.
- Collects data and facilitates accommodations as required.
- Communicates effectively with the special education teacher to advance IEP goals.
- Demonstrates cooperation, openness to growth, and teamwork.
- Monitors student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating.
- Provides direct support to staff by modeling research‑based interventions.
- Provides direct support to students by teaching and modeling research‑based interventions and curriculum.
- Coordinates with specialists and staff to implement behavior curriculum.
- Develops transition plans for students moving between educational settings.
- Develops effective intervention and crisis/safety plans.
- Ensures students remain in school and stays stable.
- Supervises and trains students in the lunchroom or during lunch periods.
- Supervises and trains students during free time and non‑instructional periods.
- Maintains a notebook for logging behavior, progress, social skills plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
- Assists students with daily living skills (e.g., toileting, feeding, diaper changes).
- Assists with deregulated students.
- Participates in team meetings.
- Assists with medical‑related duties such as catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, and assistive breathing devices.
- Assists with carry‑over services (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, Vision).
- Performs other duties as assigned by classroom teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques; effective communication and relationship building with students, parents, and staff; high‑school graduate or equivalent; willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training, that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkDuties performed in school settings such as classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting (up to 80 pounds), and other physical activities are required. Occasional travel on field trips, handling students in wheelchairs, and personal hygiene assistance for disabled students may be necessary. Training and immunization against blood‑borne pathogens may be required. Employees may experience physical and emotional outbursts from students and must be comfortable in environments with varied noise, temperature, and air quality.
After‑hour work may be required.
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
