We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every student succeeds. As a Special Education Assistant II, you will provide essential support to students with special needs and to the instructional team.
General Definition of WorkThe Special Education Assistant II supports the classroom teacher in supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs. Responsibilities include implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior, documenting progress, and maintaining IEP goals. The role provides extended classroom support, models evidence‑based behavior interventions, collects data, communicates with special education staff, and contributes to equitable opportunities for students with challenging behaviors.
Essential Functions- Develop and maintain an orderly classroom environment.
- Assist students with learning tasks assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Lead or facilitate instruction for individuals and groups.
- Carry out instructional plans and IEPs as directed.
- Maintain student training data and behavior logs.
- Support students in following routines and schedules.
- Operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Plan and implement individual schedules and sensory activities.
- Provide alternative activities for independent work.
- Coordinate school and home supports.
- Collect data and facilitate accommodations.
- Communicate effectively regarding IEP goals.
- Model and implement research‑based interventions.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with specialists.
- Assist with transition and crisis/safety planning.
- Supervise students during lunch, free time, and non‑instructional periods.
- Maintain professional notebooks with behavior logs, BIPs, social‑skills plans, and incident reports.
- Assist with daily living skills, medical duties, and related services (occupational, physical, speech, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Empathetic attitude toward students with disabilities.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques.
- Ability to communicate and build working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- High school graduate or equivalent, willing to obtain CPR certification.
Equivalent to high school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork performed in school settings: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Duties include frequent walking, standing, light lifting (up to 80 pounds), and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Transfers of students on wheelchairs, personal hygiene assistance, and participation in field trips may be required. The role requires a large amount of close contact with children, flexibility, patience, and the ability to work under stressful conditions.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.
