General Definition of WorkThe Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs; helping implement instructional plans; monitoring student behavior; documenting activities and progress; and supporting students’ IEP goals. The role also includes extended classroom support, data collection, communication with teachers or specialists, and modeling behavior interventions.
Essential Functions- Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment.
- Assists students in completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Leads and/or facilitates teaching of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class instruction.
- Carries out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and the student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Maintains student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Assists individual students to follow routines, directions, and schedules, adhering to the IEP as needed.
- Procures, sets up, and operates audio‑visual equipment.
- Assists in developing and implementing student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans.
- Creates alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
- Coordinates school and home supports and work tasks.
- Assists with data collection and facilitates accommodations as required.
- Communicates effectively with teachers to help facilitate IEP goals.
- Demonstrates cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute to a team approach to the educational program.
- Under the teacher’s or principal’s supervision, maintains student records, collects lunch money, and supports instructional activities such as field trips, library, and assemblies.
- Monitors student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating as directed.
- Introduces and models evidence‑based behavior interventions for staff.
- Teaches and models evidence‑based interventions and curriculum for students.
- Coordinates with specialists and staff to implement behavior curriculum.
- Provides transition plans and support for students moving between educational settings.
- Develops effective intervention, crisis, and safety plans in coordination with specialists and staff.
- Provides interventions to help students remain in school and/or stabilize them.
- Supervises and trains students in the lunchroom or during lunch periods.
- Supervises and trains students during free time and other non‑instructional periods.
- Maintains a notebook monitored by the teacher and specialists, containing behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skill lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
- Assists students with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, diaper changes, and positioning.
- Assists with deregulated students.
- Participates in team meetings.
- Assists with medical‑related duties such as catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, breathing device use, colostomy, and ileostomy needs.
- Coordinates carry‑over of related services (OT, PT, speech, adapted PE, vision).
- Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.
