Overview
The Kapnick Fellowship in Creative Writing at the University of Virginia is a post‑MFA/PhD Research Associate position designed to bring an emerging writer to the University of Virginia, one of the top‑ranked creative programs in the country, to participate in our vibrant writers’ community and teach innovative workshops to undergraduates.
Responsibilities- Teach two undergraduate creative writing workshops in the Fall and one in the Spring as part of a 2‑1 teaching load.
- Design a third course of personal choice that promotes creativity and literary exploration.
- Engage fully in the life of the UVA Creative Writing Program community during the fellowship period.
- Maintain a strong focus on the academic and professional development of undergraduate students.
MFA or PhD in Creative Writing completed between January 2021 and August 1, 2026; some prior teaching experience; a record of publication (no full‑length book required).
Preferred QualificationsInterest in secondary areas such as creative nonfiction, speculative fiction, screenwriting, young adult, graphic novels, creative multimedia, literary translation, or courses that include multiple genres.
Physical DemandsPrimarily sedentary, involving extensive use of a desktop computer; occasional short travel to attend meetings and programs.
Salary and BenefitsSalary of $47,000 per year with eligibility for a full UVA benefits package.
Term and LocationNine‑month fellowship that is non‑renewable, beginning in Fall 2026; fully on‑site in Charlottesville, VA.
