The position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance of the Sports Director, the Program Specialist teaches children in group settings while creating a fun and encouraging environment. Candidates are responsible for instruction as well as assisting with the preparation of practice plans and routines.
This position must perform program responsibilities in accordance with the policies, goals and mission set forth by the YMCA.
- Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
- Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
- Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (i.e., ratio, attendance, etc.).
- Be able to modify lesson plans and instruction to meet the needs of the participants.
- Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session.
- Communicate to parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen.
- Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures: respond to emergency situations.
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Adhere to YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- At least 16 years old
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- CPR/AED/First Aid required within 60 days of hire date
- YMCA New Hire Orientation and other applicable YMCA trainings within 90 days of hire date
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal abilities and computer proficiency are necessary
- Must be available to work at least three, four-hour shifts per week for P/T position
- Must have Saturday availability
The physical demands will include standing for long periods of time during cheerleading instruction. Candidates must be able to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting. Should be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
