The University of Virginia is seeking applications for the position of Teaching and Learning Librarian. This position will join a collaborative team responsible for designing and delivering instruction and programming that develops students’ information, media, and AI literacy skills. The successful candidate will develop and teach classes and workshops; collaborate on the creation of asynchronous instructional materials; lead community education initiatives;

participate in orientations, outreach, and tours; consult with students and faculty; and partner with Library colleagues to assess and respond to curricular needs. In addition, this position also serves as the liaison to the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, a division of the University dedicated to working professionals and adult learners.

As AI literacy is a growing and strategically important area, this role will design and facilitate workshops and instructional initiatives that support students’ critical and effective engagement with AI tools in academic contexts. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and a demonstrated interest in advancing AI literacy through teaching, experimentation, and program development. They will bring awareness of emerging trends in libraries and higher education, along with a commitment to innovative pedagogy, ongoing professional growth, collaboration, and excellent teaching.

This is an Assistant or Associate Librarian, Academic General Faculty (AGF) position on the Library track. AGF positions in the Library are tenure‑ineligible.

Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver engaging instruction sessions, both in‑person and online, to support information, media, and AI literacies across the University and within the Charlottesville community.
  • Collaborate on the creation of instructional materials, outcomes, and activities, including asynchronous teaching materials to provide instruction on information and AI literacy, research concepts, and facilitate student awareness of library services and equipment.
  • Develop and deliver AI literacy initiatives, including designing workshops and instructional materials that support students’ critical, ethical, and effective use of AI tools in academic contexts.
  • Provide tours, orientations, and in‑person consultations.
  • Serve as the liaison for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, responsible for communication and outreach, research support, instruction, and collection assessment for adult learners and working professionals.
  • Collaborate with other liaisons to support research in emerging and interdisciplinary areas that cross conventional subject boundaries.
  • Work collaboratively with Teaching and Learning team members and others in the Library to support the teaching and research initiatives of both the Library and University through assessment.
  • Maintain awareness of innovations and trends within the Library and instruction professions and propose, implement, and promote services and technologies that adopt new models of teaching and learning.

Anticipated starting salary at the Assistant Librarian rank: $65,000.
Anticipated starting salary at the Associate Librarian rank: $75,000.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications Required:
  • A Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited program or a terminal degree in an appropriate discipline by the start date of the appointment.
  • Experience creating online learning materials.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience.
Preferred:
  • Experience collaboratively designing, teaching, and/or assessing course‑related information literacy instruction sessions at the college level.
  • Knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy as well as current and emerging instructional technologies and their application to academic library instruction.
  • Experience designing AI literacy resources and related classes and workshops.
  • Experience in or familiarity with the operation of an academic library at a research institution.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, professional dexterity, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
