School-based Substitute Teacher

Hollymead Elementary School – 2026‑27 School Year – Full‑time, Benefits‑eligible.

As a school‑based substitute teacher, you will step in as needed for classroom teachers, specialists, or teaching assistants. You may also cover Office Assistants or support instruction with a classroom teacher.

Cover classroom teacher, specialist, or teaching assistant roles based on daily school needs. Additional responsibilities may include covering Office Assistants or supporting instruction with a classroom teacher.

• Serve in the absence of the classroom teacher.
• Deliver the lesson plan created and left by the classroom teacher.
• Meet and instruct the students at the locations and times designated.
• Develop and maintain the physical environment of the classroom that is conducive to effective learning within the limits of resources provided by the system.
• Prepare for classes assigned and show evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor or absent teacher.
• Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Maintain and uphold school and county policies and procedures.
• Maintain records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations.
• Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
• Cooperate with other members of the staff.
• Provide information and seek clarity from school administration or designee regarding questions related to students, instruction, and/or other concerns.
• Establish and maintain cooperative professional relations with others.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with school or system policies and practices.

Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students; willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques employed with students; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff; must be willing to seek and maintain CPR certification.

Candidates must hold a high‑school diploma or equivalent. Priority will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience or who are eligible for a Virginia Teaching License.

Duties are performed primarily in school settings such as classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips, movement of students by wheelchair, and lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Attendance at parent conferences, building‑level meetings, division‑wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours may be necessary.

Daily close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members, parents and medical professionals may be required. Contact with community and division‑level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
