Scope of Work

The Youth Programs Intern will work closely with the IRC School Specialists and Mentoring Specialist to support youth and their families as they work to achieve their goals related to academic and vocational areas of interest, and social integration. This may include coordination with schools, administrative tasks, and transportation assistance for various field trips and school related activities.

Responsibilities
  • Attend Volunteer/Intern Orientation.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of various activities, such as after-school tutoring, college prep workshops, and monthly outings or field trips.
  • Most work is from 9a-5p, with occasional evenings or weekend activities, or appointments in the early mornings for things such as school bus orientations.
  • Administrative support (phone calls, filing, data entry, collected signed paperwork, etc.)
  • Provide transportation for clients and their families to appointments.
  • Assist with preschool and school enrollments. Duties include completing school enrollment paperwork, collecting documents, obtaining parental signatures, and delivering forms to schools.
  • Be sensitive to the differences of clients. Respect their beliefs and values, which may differ from yours.
  • Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRC’s online Volunteer Dashboard.
Requirements
  • Pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree
  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in working with the refugee community
  • Occasional evening or weekend availability
  • Ownership of a car and a valid driver’s license and car insurance
  • Willingness to be flexible and accommodating to client needs
  • Ability to converse in a client language is strongly preferred
  • This position is unpaid and reports to the Youth Programs Supervisor.
