The CNA will provide medical services at Mountain View Primary School to support students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) as needed. This position is responsible for ensuring the health and well‑being of the student(s) in the identified special education program and completing health related tasks; does related work as required. Works under the supervision of the classroom teacher and the school's registered nurse.

In addition to the general responsibilities listed below, specific responsibilities of this position include:

• Ride transportation for field trips to and from school with student
• Implement and monitor tube feed protocol
• Implement and monitor seizure protocol
• Assist staff with hygiene protocol including diapering/toileting
• Assist staff with transferring student from equipment
• Awareness of alternative communication device protocol and assistance with implementation
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds

Works primarily with those students who are severely to profoundly limited in their ability to perform independently in terms of basic motor, sensory, self‑care, medical, cognitive and/or behavior function. Provides responsible para‑professional, clerical, and human support in assisting the classroom teacher in the management and instruction of special education students; performs related tasks as required and directed. All work is performed under the direction and supervision of the special education teacher and school nurse;

however, the aide may independently carry out particular aspects of the instructional program which includes activities outside of the normal school facility.

• Carries out instructional plans as designated by special education teacher and the student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
• Maintains student training data according to prescribed procedures.
• Undergoes training in prescribed medical procedures for assigned student to include such tasks as tube feeding, monitoring and medication administration.
• Takes and records vital signs at prescribed intervals and as warranted; monitors neurological and respiratory status and reports to the special education teacher and nurse when rates are outside of the identified normal range.
• Is able to follow the Individual Health Care Plan (IHP) and recognizes and responds appropriately to emergencies.
• Recognizes when student is having a medical emergency, such as a seizure, and takes appropriate action to include first aid measures and assists with the administration of emergency medication.
• Assists with toileting, feeding, and positioning of students; performs functions related to hygiene and comfort for assigned students.
• Prepares, cleans, and maintains classroom, bathroom, and other areas for medical or sanitary duties.
• Assists with medical related duties, i.e., catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy and ileostomy needs, both in the school setting and while transporting to and from school.
• Strictly adheres to a daily schedule which regularly and systematically accounts for the student’s IEP.
• With special education teacher's supervision and direction, carries out behavior management programs as appropriate.
• Assists special education teacher in related instructional activities (e.g., field trips, library, assembly, etc.) as directed.
• Assists in physical movement of students from one learning environment to another.
• Performs such duties as attendance, recording and collection of lunch monies as directed by special education teacher.
• Performs such clerical duties as typing, filing, and copying at the direction of special education teacher.
• Supervises and trains students during free time and other non‑instructional periods as directed by special education teacher.
• Assists in maintenance of special education students' records, under the supervision of special education teacher and/or building principal.
