OverviewThe Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; documenting activities and progress; and supporting students’ IEP goals. The role includes extended classroom support, follow-up for students receiving special services, implementation of evidence‑based behavior interventions, data collection and analysis, and communication with special education teachers and specialists.
EssentialFunctions
- Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment.
- Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Lead or facilitate instruction for individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class settings.
- Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Assist individual students in following routines, directions, and schedules.
- Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Assist in the development and implementation of individual student schedules, sensory programs and activities, motor group activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans.
- Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
- Coordinate school and home supports and work tasks.
- Collect data and facilitate accommodations as required.
- Communicate effectively with special education teachers regarding IEP goals.
- Demonstrate cooperation and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
- Assist in maintaining student records, collecting lunch monies, and related instructional activities under supervision.
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating.
- Provide direct support to staff by introducing and modeling research‑based interventions.
- Provide direct support to students by teaching and modeling interventions and curriculum.
- Coordinate with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum.
- Provide transition plans and support for students moving between educational settings.
- Develop effective intervention and crisis/safety plans with specialists and staff.
- Provide interventions to enable students to remain in school and/or stabilize them.
- Supervise and train students during lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods.
- Maintain a notebook monitored by the special education teacher and specialists, containing behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
- Assist students with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, diaper changes, and positioning.
- Assist with deregulated students and participate in team meetings.
- Assist with medical‑related duties including catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, breathing devices, colostomy, and ileostomy care.
- Assist with carry‑over of related services such as OT, PT, speech, adapted physical education, and vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
- Develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students.
- Willing to learn specialized instructional and management techniques for disabled/handicapped students.
- Communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- High school graduate or equivalent and willing to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training, that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkTypical duties include classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational settings. Requires frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 pounds, and other physical activities necessary for the care of disabled students. Occasional travel on field trips, handling students in wheelchairs, and personal hygiene care may be required. Training and immunization against blood‑borne pathogens is necessary. Duties may involve after‑hour work and exposure to stressful or noisy environments.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.
