Open Rank, Tenure-ineligible Faculty in First Year Engineering

The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for an Academic General Faculty (AGF) position in our innovative and collaborative First-Year Engineering Center (FYEC). The successful candidate will join our faculty to collaborate in teaching and advising first-year students. Established in 2023, the FYEC creates a common first-year experience where students cultivate essential engineering mindsets focusing on engineering design practices, culture, character, courage, connection, belonging and fostering an environment of psychological safety.

In doing so, students begin to develop their engineering identity and societal responsibility as well as relevant technical skills needed in any field of engineering. FYEC faculty collaboratively design and deliver hands-on learning experiences that engage students in engineering design and socio-technical thinking within team-based projects.

Faculty also serve as academic advisors, supporting students' transition to college and into their chosen majors.

We are seeking a dedicated member of the faculty to actively collaborate with the First-Year Engineering Center team and contribute to the improvement of the program while teaching sections of engineering foundations and advising first-year students. This is a full-time, benefits eligible, Academic General Faculty (AGF) position, at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, or Associate Professor. Appointments are made on an annual 9-month basis.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a degree in engineering or a closely related field of science or mathematics. Candidates should demonstrate strong interest in employing evidence-based teaching practices and working in a collaborative instructional environment. Additionally, candidates should have experience with technical skills such as CAD, 3D printing, and low-fidelity prototyping, preferably with experience using these tools as an instructor in a classroom setting.

Candidates should have experience teaching, facilitating, or developing engineering design projects or a related technical discipline. Experience with and a strong commitment to curriculum development and academic advising is preferred.

As an Academic General Faculty, there are two tracks to which you can apply:
Lecturer track and Professorial track. To be considered for Lecturer ranks, applicants must have at least a Master's degree plus teaching experience. Lecturers will typically be expected to engage in service but will not be required to be engaged in scholarship. To be considered for Professorial ranks, applicants must have a Ph.D. degree by January 1, 2027. Along with teaching, faculty in professorial positions also have service responsibilities and will be expected to engage in either disciplinary or educational scholarship activities for promotion.

This position is for three years beginning in January 2027 with the possibility of renewal. The salary will be commensurate with experience and will include fringe benefits. This position is based in Charlottesville at our principal location.
