Position: Senior Education Abroad Advisor and Assistant Director, UVA in Valencia

The International Studies Office (ISO) is currently accepting applications for a Senior Education Abroad Advisor & Assistant Director, UVA in Valencia. The ISO is a division of UVA Global, a University-wide resource that contributes to UVA's global mission through activities, programs, and services designed to support the development of a globally aware education and research environment. Through the International Students and Scholars Program, UVA Education Abroad, the Lorna Sundberg International Center, and Center for American English Language and Culture, the ISO provides expertise and infrastructure to help expand and sustain global education at the University of Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advising, referral, and resources for UVA students interested in education abroad, especially the UVA in Valenica program, including goal setting, selecting programs, identifying sources of funding, building cross-cultural awareness, and mitigation of risks.
  • Maintain expertise in Higher Education systems of an assigned region of the world and oversee a portfolio of programs and exchanges in the region.
  • Within the assigned region and portfolio:
    • Assist in developing and promoting UVA in Valencia and other assigned programs online, on Grounds, and at select education abroad fairs across the U.S.
    • Develop and manage relationships with U.S. colleges and universities who send students to UVA in Valencia.
    • Oversee program admissions, administer program enrollment, and ensure students' compliance with registration and transfer credit requirements for UVA in Valencia and other assigned programs.
    • Provide pre-departure guidance.
    • Enter grades and manage transcript requests from early (pre-2006) participants for UVA in Valencia.
    • Maintain expertise in Spanish visa requirements, provide clear instructions to students, and manage the batch application process for approximately 300 visa applications per year.
  • Maintain relationships with assigned schools, departments, and administrative offices of the University, as well as the UVA in Valencia administration and the UVA in Valencia Faculty Program Director and Assistant Director.
  • Supervise any assigned Education Abroad Advisor(s).
  • Additional responsibilities to support the work of UVA Education Abroad as assigned.

Candidates are required to possess knowledge of principles and issues of study abroad advising. Candidates must also possess strong oral and written communication skills, including intercultural and interpersonal communication. The ability to interact with study abroad program representatives, colleagues in other offices, faculty, and students in a highly professional manner with an understanding of protocol and confidentiality is essential. Evidence of strong organizational, administrative, and computer/digital skills is required.

Knowledge of NAFSA:
Association of International Educators professional ethics and competencies is desirable along with knowledge of the Forum on Education Abroad Standards of Good Practice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:

    Master's degree required or bachelor's degree with at least 8 years of relevant experience required in lieu of Master's.
  • Language:
    Native or near-native fluency in Spanish
  • Experience:

    4+ years of relevant professional experience, to include student advising or program coordination, and experience studying or living abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience studying on the UVA in Valencia program
  • At least four years of student advising or program coordination experience
  • An MA degree in a relevant field (International Education, Intercultural Relations)
  • Experience working with student information systems, education abroad platforms such as Terra Dotta (TDS), and graphic design platforms such as Canva
  • 2+ years of formal management experience

The Education Abroad Advisor Assistant Director, UVA in Valenciawill report to the Associate Director for Education Abroad.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The anticipated hiring range is $70,, commensurate with education and experience.
