Description

The Department of French at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor whose scholarship is anchored in French and francophone global literature and culture from . Deeply committed to multidisciplinarity and innovative teaching, the department seeks a new colleague whose work challenges temporal and geographic boundaries while engaging with broad areas of humanistic inquiry, such as race and religion, nation and empire;

the history of the book and digital humanities; ecocriticism and environmental humanities; gender and LGBTQ+ studies; or performance studies. The successful candidate will be someone able to foster ties with colleagues working in other departments and with interdepartmental units and programs, such as the graduate certificates in Premodern Cultures and Communities, Digital Humanities, and Women, Gender and Sexuality; the Islamic Worlds Initiative;

or the School of Data Science.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate a rigorous scholarly research agenda and promise of a strong publication record. They must also have relevant skills and experience preparing them to be an outstanding graduate and undergraduate teacher and mentor, and to contribute to the goals of the University and the scholarly life of the Department of French. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester.

Native or near-native fluency in French and English is required. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field by the appointment start date of August 10, 2027.
