Position Overview

Wastewater Operator Trainee

Shift: Rotating 12‑hour schedule, 3–4 days per week, rotating every two weeks between 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (days) and 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM (nights); shift differential 2%.
Responsibilities- Assist with the operation of wastewater treatment processes, including chemical, biological, and physical systems
- Conduct routine facility inspections and monitor system performance using SCADA and instrumentation
- Record operational data and maintain accurate logs and reports
- Assist with wastewater and sludge sampling and basic laboratory testing
- Monitor and adjust chemical feed systems under supervision
- Respond to alarms, equipment issues, and operational needs with guidance from licensed operators
- Learn plant piping, valving systems, and flow control processes
- Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs
- Maintain facility cleanliness and perform general groundskeeping tasks
- Follow all safety procedures and regulatory requirements
- Support team operations and respond appropriately to public or internal inquiries
- Graduation from an accredited trade school or high school or GED required.
- Must have a valid, unrestricted Virginia Driver’s License.
- Preferred not required:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline
In Virginia, Water/Wastewater Operators must hold a state license based on facility complexity (Class 4–Class
1). Rivanna operates Class 1 facilities; employees are expected to work toward obtaining a Class 1 Operator license with training and support provided.
- Ability to learn technical wastewater treatment processes and systems
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
- Basic math skills (including ratios, percentages, and calculations)
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and procedures
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry and reporting
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn equipment operation
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, and use of hands and arms
- Occasional work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and outdoor environments
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with proper technique
- Vision and sensory abilities necessary for safe and effective operations
- Exposure to mechanical equipment, chemicals, outdoor weather, and varying noise levels
- Work may occur in treatment plants, pump stations, and remote facilities
- Position is designated as essential personnel and may require response during emergencies
- Occasional travel for training, meetings, or operational needs

CompensationStarts at $24/hour ($50,000 per year); 7% increase for each Wastewater License Obtained. Level and compensation to be commensurate with Certifications, Licenses, and Years of Experience.
