Position: Watershed Stewardship Specialist (Temp)

Temporary, Non-Exempt

This is a temporary position working approximately 20 - 40 hours per week. Position duration is 6 months.

Job Summary / Objective

The Watershed Stewardship Specialist supports the Watershed Stewardship Manager in implementing the County’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program and identifying, planning, and stewarding water quality improvement (TMDL) projects and ecological restoration projects. Responsibilities include compiling information about the MS4 program, developing training and outreach materials, providing research to support potential future water quality improvement projects, and editing mapped data in GIS.

This position also involves some field work such as investigating water pollution incidents and assessing vegetative and structural conditions at restoration sites.

Essential Functions
  • Collecting and tracking data; preparing reports; and supporting compliance with MS4 permit requirements.
  • Developing educational information and training materials for the general public and for County staff to promote water quality best management practices.
  • Conducting field work related to the MS4 Program, including illicit discharge detection and elimination, stormwater outfall investigations, and assessment of conditions and exploration of opportunities for water quality improvement projects.
Competency:

Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of watershed management and protection, land use planning, erosion and sediment control, and stormwater management.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information.
  • Ability to prepare technical written or oral reports; strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with the use of GIS, databases, and other information management systems strongly preferred.
Required Education And Experience
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in environmental science or policy, planning, civil engineering or similar field with a minimum of one year of professional experience; or a master’s degree in one of the fields listed above.
Physical And Mental Requirements
  • Work is typically performed in an office work setting, and field work is required occasionally.
  • Outdoor work requires vehicle operation, extensive walking over difficult terrains, steep slopes, and wet and slippery conditions.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying moderate weight up to 20 pounds, and exposure to adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and precipitation.
  • Employees must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the qualifications of the County’s driver eligibility program. Occasional travel between County facilities or to off-site meetings may be required.
Pay Information

The hiring range for this position is $30 – $43.83 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. This position will work approximately 20 hours per week, and the assignment will last 6 months. This is a part time, FLSA nonexempt position.

Remote Work

This role is not eligible for remote work. On-site presence is required. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
