Position: Virginia DCJS Certified Police Officer (School Resource Officer)

Overview

THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR VIRGINIA DCJS CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICERS ONLY

This DCJS Certified Police Officer performs responsible protective service work as a School Resource Officer
, in conjunction with Charlottesville City School staff, to ensure the safety and security of school campuses, students, staff, and visitors. This position is a sworn police officer assignment and reports to a Police Sergeant (police assignments are at the discretion of the Police Chief and/or their designee).

Pay and Benefits: Pay will be between $26.45 to $47.77 hourly ($55,016.00 - $99,365.02 annually), depending on sworn law enforcement experience. Officers are eligible to receive an education stipend for completed Associate Degree ($1,000 per year) or Bachelor's Degree ($2,000 per year). This is a full-time, non-exempt position and provides benefits including health insurance options with employer contribution, paid vacation and sick leave, employer-paid life insurance, City retirement options, gym reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

Notes: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, with a Portability Agreement with VRS. Questions pertaining to the Portability Agreement can be directed to the City s Benefits Administrator.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a front-line liaison between the Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) and Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) to ensure mutual trust and open communication.
  • Ensures the safety and security of CCS buildings and events in concert with CCS administration and school Care & Safety Assistants (CSAs).
  • Establishes and maintains a professional rapport with students and works closely with school administration to resolve issues, providing legal resources, referrals, and/or diversion as necessary.
  • Performs State mandated tasks such as threat assessments and security assessments.
  • Provides instructional support in areas related to Driver Education, Substance Abuse Awareness and Risk, and Personal Safety and Situational Awareness.
  • Documents incidents in detail and maintains concise reports and records.
  • Drives and safely operates police vehicles.
  • Stays current on Virginia Laws, City ordinances, and CPD rules and regulations.
  • Participates in mandatory and elective trainings and attends seminars and training programs.
  • Maintains proficiency with firearms and self-defense; serves as a resource to peers in complex or difficult emergency situations.
  • May be required to report to work on scheduled days off or return during disasters or emergencies.
  • Performs all duties with confidentiality and integrity; responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment and resources, including work time; maintains regular attendance.
Other Duties
  • May perform duties of Police Officer as required or reassigned.
  • May appear in court to present evidence and testify.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent; and at least 2 years of experience as a Police Officer.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements
  • Certification as a Virginia Police Officer.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia driver s license and an acceptable driving record per city criteria.
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident applying for citizenship; documentation required.

    Note:

    citizenship waiver must be approved by the DCJS.
  • Must sign a Condition of Employment Acknowledging prohibition of tobacco use on and off duty.
  • Must hold and maintain:
    Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer certification; VCIN; firearms proficiency; and CPR/First Aid.
  • Work schedule requires flexible shifts, holidays, nights, and weekends; may involve extended assignments.
  • Must pass all phases of screening including written exam, physical agility test, interviews, background check, polygraph, psychological and medical exams, and pre-employment drug screening. Current Virginia certified officers may have waivers for some tests.
  • Must be in satisfactory health to perform academy training, field training, and duties; reasonable accommodations available on a case-by-case basis.
  • Successful completion of field training and probationary period after field training.
