Under the direction of the Enterprise Coding Director, the Enterprise Coding Supervisor is responsible for providing first‑line supervision for Medical Coding staff. Supervisor responsibilities include but are not limited to: daily supervision and monitoring of quality and productivity performance, interviewing, hiring, and any necessary discipline of staff. This position also involves participation in process improvement projects and supporting the work needed to meet department and institutional wide goals.
Responsibilities- Provides daily supervision of coding staff and provides feedback to the Coding Manager on exceptional and/or substandard performance.
- Leads all efforts associated with hiring, interviewing, onboarding and discipline.
- Provides ongoing feedback to staff on areas for improvement.
- Ensures that all members of the coding team are following official policies and standard procedures and conducts discipline for those in violation.
- Counsels coding staff on actions required to meet minimum performance requirements.
- Provides or arranges for necessary knowledge‑based resources required by the coding staff to meet quality and production standards.
- Prepares staffing schedules to provide adequate coverage for all work queues and bodies of work
8. Supervises audits of coded medical records. - Compiles, analyzes, and presents data related to coder performance, documentation issues, and charging errors.
- Analyzes, plans, evaluates, and implements processes designed to maintain KPI’s at or exceeding determined benchmarks for assigned team(s).
- Serves, manages, and supports internal and external customers to the CBO.
- Suggests and participates in performance improvement activities.
- Investigates documents and resolves problems and complaints.
- Is accountable for own work responsibilities.
- Maintains a positive and professional work environment.
- Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
- Assumes responsibilities for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others.

The ideal candidate for the Supervisor, Enterprise Coding (hospital Inpatient) has:
- Recent inpatient coding leadership experience in a major academic medical center, with demonstrated ability to manage complex, high‑acuity case mixes.
- Extensive, expert‑level knowledge of inpatient coding principles, including ICD‑10‑CM/PCS; MS‑DRG and APR‑DRG logic;
Hospital Acquired Conditions (HACs);
Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs);
Present on Admission (POA) requirements;
Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCCs); and other hospital quality metrics. - Proven leadership skills, including coaching, performance oversight, quality review, and development of inpatient coding staff.
- Strong operational and workflow management experience, including productivity monitoring, workload balancing, and resolution of day‑to‑day coding issues and escalations.
- Ability to work effectively in a teleworking environment, maintaining high performance, communication, and accountability across remote teams.
- Willingness to travel onsite occasionally to leadership office in Charlottesville, VA.
- AHIMA credential of RHIA or RHIT with CCS.
- Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Experience: 5 years of relevant experience required, with at least one year in a lead position. 2 years’ Supervisory experience preferred.
- Licensure: One of the following certifications are required:
Certification Professional Coder (CPC, CCS‑P), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist Physician‑Based (CCS‑P).
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
The starting base rate for this role is $70,595.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
