Children living with chronic illness require more than medical care alone. They need clinicians who understand the psychological, developmental, and family dynamics that shape their experience. This role is a rare opportunity to directly influence how behavioral health is integrated into pediatric specialty care at UVA Health.
This newly created position is designed to embed a licensed behavioral health clinician within pediatric subspecialty teams, delivering therapeutic care to children and families navigating complex, long-term conditions. As part of a forward-thinking pilot program, you will have the opportunity to shape the model while practicing at the top of your license in an academic health system.
The RoleThis is a high-impact, clinically focused role where you will provide therapy and behavioral health support to pediatric patients and families across multiple subspecialty clinics. You will be embedded within Pediatrics, collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams while maintaining autonomy in your clinical practice.
In a typical week, you will balance direct patient care, team collaboration, and program development in a dynamic hybrid environment (in-person and remote).
You will:
- Provide therapeutic mental health services to pediatric patients and their families
- Support children coping with:
- Chronic illness adjustment
- Developmental and social challenges
- Family and peer dynamics
- Work across multiple pediatric subspecialties
, including:- Hematology/Oncology
- Cardiology
- Potential expansion into additional clinics such as GI
- Collaborate with physicians, APPs, and interdisciplinary care teams to integrate behavioral health into medical care plans
- Build and manage your own patient caseload
, adapting to clinic needs - Coordinate referrals and embed seamlessly into clinical workflows
- Contribute to the development and structure of this pilot program
, helping define best practices and care pathways
Success in this role requires both clinical independence and strong collaboration
, as well as comfort navigating ambiguity in a new program setting.
Clinical
- Provides expert evidence-based, top-of-scope care in their clinical practice
- Acts as part of a specialty team, collaborating with other clinicians as appropriate
- Provides health education to patients
- Maintains accurate, timely, and thorough documentation
- Ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory standards
- Supports development of best practices and protocols in specialty
- Serves on committees and work groups to enhance patient care
- Provides education to learners in the clinical space
- Mentors new team members
- Contributes to clinical quality improvement work
- Participates in professional governance through the APP Council
- Attends team development meetings at local and departmental levels
- Adheres to ASPIRE values in all professional interactions
- Maintains appropriate licenses, certifications, and specialty training competencies
- Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations
