The University of Virginia's number one ranked Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) provides a comprehensive range of medical, mental health, well-being, and disability support services to all enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Virginia’s Student Disability Access Center (SDAC), a unit within the Department of Student Health and Wellness, is seeking a skilled ASL/English Interpreter to facilitate equal access and effective communication across academic and campus environments.

The ASL/English Interpreter will provide services for students, faculty, staff, and visitors in classrooms, meetings, events, and other university activities. This position will work closely with SDAC’s Assistant Director of d/Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality ASL/English interpreting services for complex, specialized, and academically rigorous content in a variety of academic and professional settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and other university activities.
  • Interpret accurately and effectively, conveying the meaning, intent, tone, and register of all participants while supporting full access and engagement.
  • Develop familiarity with assigned courses, subject matter, and communication preferences through ongoing preparation and collaboration with applicable students, faculty, and/or staff.
  • Review course materials, terminology, and other resources to ensure effective and accurate service delivery.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, disability services personnel, and interpreter colleagues to support communication access and continuity of services.
  • Adhere to the RID/NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, maintaining confidentiality, professional boundaries, and ethical standards.
  • Participate in professional development and continuing education activities to maintain and enhance interpreting competency.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism in supporting a dynamic university environment, including occasional evening or weekend assignments.
  • Contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative campus community
  • Contribute to the SHW and SDAC teams ongoing work to support students through presence in meetings, events, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School or equivalent required;
    Completion of accredited interpreter training program required.
  • Experience:

    3+ years relevant experience required.
  • Licensure:
    National certification as an ASL-English interpreter (RID, NIC, BEI, or equivalent certification).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing interpreting services in academic, postsecondary, or other complex professional environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex, specialized, and academically rigorous content with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Strong preparation skills, including the ability to review and master specialized terminology and subject matter.
  • Knowledge of interpreting ethics, professional standards, and best practices.
  • Experience working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and interpreting colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in higher education settings, designated interpreting, or specialized academic, research, healthcare, or technical environments is highly valued.
Physical Demands

Job requires frequently traveling (distance: minimum 1 mile/daily). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills;
Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Salary Range
  • The anticipated hiring range is $40.00 - $50.00/hourly, commensurate with education and experience.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
