Overview
The University Of Virginia Facilities Management (FM) Department is currently seeking a Recycling Supervisor to support our sustainability goals and provide a state‑of‑the‑art recycling program for the University.
Key Responsibilities- Manage UVA’s recycling sort facility, where staff hand‑sort and bale recyclable material collected on campus.
- Ensure trash dumpsters, roll‑offs, and compactors are emptied by the trash contractor and that compactors are operating correctly.
- Oversee storage and transportation of confidential material, pallets, metal, batteries, and light bulbs collected throughout the University.
- Manage waste‑management activities for special events and waste requests on campus.
- Plan, assign, supervise, train, and evaluate recycle workers; provide technical expertise and establish work goals and objectives.
- Review, develop, and modify crew schedules and routes; determine work priorities for crew members.
- Ensure all required work is completed in a timely and professional manner.
- Resolve problems with crew members, mediate conflicts, promote teamwork, and communicate business issues to crews.
- Develop performance goals, document feedback, and formally evaluate employee work.
- Select candidates for open recycle‑worker positions and sit on hiring panels for interviews.
- Supervise recycling crews during special event weekends, snow‑removal operations, and day‑to‑day collection activities.
- Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, including OSHA and applicable regulations.
- Other duties assigned as needed.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Four years of experience in material management, operations/logistics, hospitality/service industry, or a related field, including supervisory responsibilities.
- No licensure or certification required.
Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs, and perform repetitive motions while using both hands.
Salary Range$24.00–$28.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Position Type & Work Location- Non‑exempt level, benefits‑eligible position.
- Based in Charlottesville, VA; full‑time on‑site work required.
