Custodian - Stone Robinson Elementary School (Evening Shift)

Full-time, Evening shift

This position performs routine cleaning and sanitizing tasks in the school building. Under limited supervision, the custodian is responsible for floor maintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the perimeter of the school. Shift work may be required.

Essential

Functions
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and dusts all classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms
  • Keeps building and premises neat and clean at all times
  • Uses appropriate equipment and supplies to wipe and sanitize toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops, windows, and water fountains
  • Empties trash and restocks paper products at all points of use
  • Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing/burning, scrubbing and/or recoating
  • Vacuum and cares for building carpeting; washes windows and furniture
  • Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walkways, removing weeds, trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow; picks up litter and debris on outside grounds
  • Replaces light bulbs, tubes, ceiling tile, switches, outlet plates, and pencil sharpeners as needed
  • Moves furniture, folds and unfolds chairs safely as needed
  • Stores and cares for all cleaning equipment and materials
  • Responds to maintenance requests from school administrators and staff, including minor maintenance, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, and setting up or taking down for school functions and student activities
  • Demonstrates and models professionalism at all times
  • Drives a county vehicle as required, following standard operating procedures
  • Follows blood-borne pathogen procedures and responds to accidents or safety hazards involving chemical spills or bodily fluids
  • Uses various power equipment including riding scrubbers, rotary machines, pressure washers, drills, carpet extractors, vacuums, and specialty tools
  • Provides custodial services at all ACPS schools as needed; float custodians will report on a daily basis to schools
  • Is designated Essential Personnel, reporting to the job site during emergency situations such as snow or inclement weather; may be on call 24/7 for emergencies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment, including high-powered buffers and vacuums. Knowledge of customer service principles and quality standards. Awareness of occupational hazards and safety regulations. Ability to follow directions independently and work well in a team. Ability to use basic math for dilution ratios and schedule work effectively. Ability to operate cleaning equipment efficiently and safely. Ability to handle conflict and provide a service‑oriented attitude.

Must be able to check ACPS email daily.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience in a customer service, custodial or janitorial setting. Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia may be required.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Work is performed walking or standing. Must lift up to 10 pounds continuously, 10‑25 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds occasionally. Exposure to inclement weather, hazardous substances, and drive conditions is possible. Custodians regularly interact with teachers, students, and administrators.
