Overview
Custodian - Burley Middle School (Evening Shift) – Albemarle County Public Schools. Full-time, Evening shift.

This position performs routine work in cleaning/sanitizing an assigned area of a school building by following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Under limited supervision, this position is also responsible for floor maintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the immediate perimeter of the school building.
Shiftwork may be required.
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and dusts all classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms
- Keeps building and premises neat and clean at all times
- Uses appropriate equipment and supplies to wipe and sanitize toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops, windows and water fountains
- Empties trash and restocks paper products at all points of use
- Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing/burnishing, scrubbing and/or recoating
- Vacuums and cares for building carpeting;
Washes windows and furniture - Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walkways, removing weeds, trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow; picks up litter and debris on outside school grounds
- Replaces light bulbs, tubes, ceiling tile, switch and outlet plates and pencil sharpeners as needed
- Moves furniture, folds and unfolds chairs safely as needed
- Stores and cares for all cleaning equipment and cleaning materials
- Responds to requests from school administrators and staff, including minor maintenance, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, and setting up/taking down for functions and student activities
- Demonstrates and models professionalism at all times
- Drives a county vehicle as required, following standard operating procedures
- Follows Blood-Borne Pathogen procedures and responds to accidents or potential safety hazards
- Uses various power equipment including riding scrubbers, rotary machines, pressure washers, drills, carpet extractors, vacuums, and specialty equipment
- Provides custodial services at any of our schools as needed; float custodians report to assigned schools daily
- Designated as Essential Personnel; may be required to report to the job site during emergencies and may be on call 24/7
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit
Skills And Abilities
General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment, including operation of heavy commercial cleaning equipment. Strong customer service principles, safety awareness, and ability to follow directions, work independently, and work in a team. Develops cooperative relationships with employees and the public, responds to routine inquiries, uses basic math for dilution calculations, plans daily work, and prioritizes to meet deadlines. Ability to use specialized cleaning equipment, exercise good judgment, and communicate effectively.
Must possess ability to check ACPS email daily.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, and one year of work experience in a customer service, custodial or janitorial setting. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfactory health condition to meet physical requirements. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on assignment.
Work is typically performed by walking or standing. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds continuously, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds occasionally. May be exposed to inclement weather and adverse driving conditions. Custodial staff may work independently in schools. The environment may involve exposure to potentially hazardous substances. Daily contact with teachers, students, administration, the public and other staff.
Ability to coordinate work, handle complaints, and maintain a service-oriented attitude is essential.
