Position: UVA Earned Media Team: Digital Marketing Intern (Student Wage)

Overview:

The University of Virginia’smedia relations team, which is part of Officeof University Communications,islooking to hirea thoughtful, detail-oriented studentcolleague, who willleadproductioncycleof our twice-weekly media newsletter, which reaches thousands of journalists.

This opportunity sits at the intersection of legacy media and emerging media,offeringdirectexperience into the constantly evolving nature of universitymediarelations in the digital era.

This position will own the creation and execution of the newsletter,includinghelpingthe media relations team torefine its design and delivery. Beyond publishing each edition, this role willsupportstrategic emaillist management and subscriberdevelopment.

Intotality, those responsibilities and opportunities offer a student internship role with nearly limitlesspotential.

This position is great for someone whoenjoys refining processes over time and delivering work on a consistent cadence. While an interest in journalism and media is valuable, this positionisbest suitedtocandidateswith a passion in high-quality execution, the strategic aspects ofemailcommunications, audience growth, and understanding how digital content reaches and engages with varying audiences.

You will be joining a small but determined Earned Media Team, where our mission is harnessing strategic media coverage tobenefitthe public and elevate the standing ofworld-classUVA experts.

Our work directly supports UVA’s role as a public institution that serves all citizens of Virginia.

The starting date and weekly schedule are both highly  addition, the location of the work is highly flexible, hybrid in nature,and adaptable to student schedules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce and distribute thetwice-weekly UVA Media Advisory newsletter,including drafting, editing, formatting, and quality assurance.

  • Maintain and improve the health of our media contact listserv by researching, adding, organizing, and removing contacts as needed.

  • Monitor engagement trends and recommend ideas to improve newsletter performance and user experience.

  • Brainstorm and test creative ways to make content easier for journalists to scan, discover relevant stories, and connect with our team for interview opportunities.

  • Work across a broad array of UVA experts and topic areas.

  • While not a responsibility, this role carries the opportunitytocontribute to University Communications’broaderoverall strategy and content.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Virginia.

  • Passionate long-term interest inthe mission of public universities and how thatmissionintersects with public relations,digital marketing, communications,and the role of journalism in our society’s health and vibrance.

  • Dedicated to execution. Demonstrated track recordof drawingenergy from the workof regular production cycles.

  • Basicproficiencyorability to learnemail marketing software (Marketing Cloud, Mail Chimp, etc.)

  • Committed collaborator who gravitates toward team settings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with email marketing platforms (Marketing Cloud, Mailchimp,etc.)

  • Experience creating newsletters, editorial content, orstrategic messaging for varying audiences.

  • Interest in journalism, media relations,and academic research.

Scheduling

Digital marketing intern expected to work approximately 20 hours per week.

Compensation

$20/hr.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
