Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a full-time appointment. Clinical scope is focused on ambulatory women’s care including obstetrics and benign gynecology services. This role expands our current team of 7 APPs and 8 Certified Nurse Midwives. We are looking for a flexible, energetic, highly motivated professional to support the Advanced Practitioner team’s top of license scope of services.
The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced academic environment, supporting growth of APP practice within the UVA Health System through strong communication, teamwork, teaching, and patient care skills.
- In-scope ambulatory obstetrical and well-women gynecological healthcare in various outpatient locations in the Charlottesville area and outreach sites within the UVA Health footprint.
- Educate residents and medical students; support nurse practitioner student clinical rotations; participate in developing women’s ambulatory service programs; engage in community outreach; participate in departmental activities, including academic meetings and research.
- Collaborate with the Advanced Practitioner team to deliver top-of-license care; maintain patient-centered, coordinated care; communicate effectively with patients, families, facility personnel, and the broader UVA Health System.
- Minimum requirements:
Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant; license or license eligible as an Advanced Practice Provider in Virginia; current BLS; ACLS as required; PALS/NRP as position requires; DEA registration and state credentialing as applicable. - Experience:
One to two years minimum as an Advanced Practice Provider preferred; experience in women’s services or academic medical centers strongly encouraged, with consideration for new graduates. - Skills:
ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced academic environment; strong communication, teamwork, teaching, and patient care skills; capacity to support APP practice growth within the health system.
- Independently and in collaboration with physicians and interprofessional team, provide comprehensive clinical and organizational direction for patient care.
- Perform comprehensive history and physical assessments; document findings; order and interpret diagnostic labs and tests; formulate medical diagnoses; develop, implement and evaluate treatment plans; prescribe pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
- Initiate appropriate specialty referrals; recognize emergent situations and initiate life-saving interventions; communicate plans with patients and families; coordinate care pathways and protocols.
- Conduct in-scope obstetrical and gynecological care including routine annual visits with preventive health testing (e.g., pap, HPV, STD testing), routine follow-up, non-emergent complaints, IUD insertion/removal, and colposcopies; colposcopy, IUD insertion/removal, vulvar biopsies, and endometrial biopsies may be acquired over time if not currently certified for services.
- Precepts APP students and mentors other APPs; collaborate with medical students to meet training goals and provide feedback.
- Provide clinical education consistent with evidence-based practices and protocols; outreach and community education within the Advanced Practice arena.
- Serve as a role model for colleagues and the community; demonstrate respect and leadership in mentorship and empowerment of others in healthcare.
- Lead quality assurance initiatives, performance improvement, benchmarking, and application of evidence-based practice; participate in accreditation preparedness and leadership development.
- Maintain licensure, certification, DEA registration, and privileges; pursue ongoing professional development and contribute to M&M, Grand Rounds, and related activities.
