Position: Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) - Malignant Hematology

UVA Health is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the Malignant Hematology ambulatory Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. This position offers the opportunity to practice in a highly collaborative, academic environment within the UVA School of Medicine's Division of Hematology & Oncology/Medical Oncology and UVA Health's Center for Advanced Practice, caring for patients with complex acute and chronic hematologic malignancies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior clinical experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in hematology, oncology, or malignant hematology, preferably in an academic or ambulatory specialty setting
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, high‑acuity patient populations with acute and chronic disease states
  • Experience with or willingness to be trained in bone marrow biopsies and skin biopsies
  • Ability to practice with a high level of clinical independence while collaborating effectively with supervising physicians and interdisciplinary team members
  • Strong skills in clinical assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision‑making
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary care model
  • Familiarity with Epic (EPIC) electronic medical record preferred
  • Commitment to evidence‑based practice, continuous professional development, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Interest in academic medicine, including participation in education, research, or process improvement activities
Background Checks and Health Screenings

Background checks and pre‑employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety‑sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

Administration
  • Participate in a structured four‑month onboarding process with progressive independence
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the Epic EMR in compliance with institutional, state, and federal requirements
  • Coordinate care logistics, including scheduling of tests, procedures, and referrals
  • Assist with APP coverage within the malignant hematology ambulatory team
  • Adhere to infection control protocols when caring for immunocompromised patients
Professional
  • Practice in a model emphasizing independent clinical decision‑making with physician collaboration
  • Engage in continuous professional development and evidence‑based practice
  • Demonstrate strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills

Clinical
  • Manage eight independent ambulatory clinic sessions (4 hours per session)
  • Perform and document comprehensive histories and physical exams
  • Develop differential diagnoses and individualized treatment plans in collaboration with attending hematologists
  • Order, interpret, and manage diagnostic tests and imaging studies related to hematologic malignancies
  • Prescribe and manage pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic therapies, adjusting plans based on patient response
  • Monitor and manage side effects and complications of chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies
  • Perform bone marrow biopsies and skin biopsies
  • Provide patient and family education regarding disease processes, treatments, side effects, prognosis, and survivorship
