Advanced Practice Provider; NP​/PA​/APP-Neurocritical Care

Overview

The position at UVA Health in the Nerancy Neurocritical Care Unit (NNICU) and Neurologic Intermediate Care Unit (NIMU) offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with an interest in critical care and neurology. Preferred experience includes 1-2 years of hospital-based medicine, including critical care medicine, but we are open to training new graduates with a thorough orientation.

The APP will provide professional services to evaluate and treat critically ill patients with underlying neurologic diagnoses. This includes performing bedside procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement, midline placement, lumbar puncture, and bronchoscopy. Candidates do not need prior procedure experience or ability to demonstrate competencies with procedures to apply.

This full‑time role (40 hours/week) involves rotating 12‑hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The APP will be expected to provide patient care in both the NNICU and NIMU.

The role is fast‑paced with a rapidly growing scope of management. Motivated APPs will have robust opportunities in research and quality improvement. The position offers the opportunity to bill for evaluation and management services when providing care in the NIMU.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Collaborate with Neurology and Neurosurgery teams in a multi‑disciplinary approach for patient management.
• Act as a valued member of an interprofessional team that includes attendings, residents, fellows, etc.
• Perform and document comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
• Formulate diagnoses, identify problems and health‑risk profiles, and clearly communicate and collaborate with other team members.
• Evaluate and analyze patient responses to disease processes and/or therapeutic, diagnostic interventions.
• Provide information, education, and support to patients/families regarding disease processes and treatment plans.
• Perform procedures within scope of practice and UVA Health credentialing and privileges.
• Participate in the clinical experience of students, interns, and residents as appropriate.
• Meet quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health.
• Promote the professional practice of the advanced practice group by serving as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and allied health care practitioners.
• Update practice through continuing education by attending conferences, rounds, reports, lectures, journal clubs, and regional/national professional conferences.

• Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
• Facilitate timely patient flow through effective coordination with interdisciplinary team members.
• Support clinical operations through adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and clinical pathways.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and workflow optimization as assigned.

• Practice in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and scope of practice for Advanced Practice Providers.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
• Advocate for patients and families regarding educational needs, treatment options, ethical considerations, and patient rights.
• Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs of neurocritical care patients and families.
• Engage in ongoing professional development, continuing education, and maintenance of certification and licensure.

• Provide comprehensive clinical care to neurocritically ill patients independently and in collaboration with ICU, Neurosurgery, and Neurology physicians and interdisciplinary team members.

• Document clinical findings, including pertinent normal and abnormal findings, in the medical record.
