As the Nurse Manager for Acute Care General Medicine, you will oversee a highly engaged and experienced nursing team caring for adult patients with a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This role combines clinical leadership, operational oversight, financial stewardship, staff development, and quality improvement, providing a meaningful opportunity to shape both caregiver and patient experiences within a collaborative academic health system.
The Role
4 Central is a 27-bed Adult Acute Care General Medicine Unit caring for patients with conditions including pneumonia, sepsis, COPD, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell disease, fractures, and other common medical diagnoses. The unit is supported by a stable, experienced team with an average nursing tenure of 7 to 8 years and a strong culture of engagement and collaboration.
As Nurse Manager, you will provide leadership for day-to-day operations while partnering with physicians, Assistant Nurse Managers, Nursing Supervisors, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, patient-centered care.
A typical day includes:
* Attending daily staffing huddles beginning at 7:00 a.m.
* Leading visual management board discussions and operational reviews
* Escalating key issues and resource needs through leadership huddles
* Monitoring staffing operations and workforce planning
* Tracking, analyzing, and reporting quality and patient safety metrics
* Participating in Medicine Department leadership meetings
* Managing department finances and budget accountability
* Reporting quality outcomes during patient safety and risk rounds
* Coaching, mentoring, and developing nursing staff
* Conducting performance management activities including counseling, attendance management, and accountability conversations
* Supporting staff engagement, retention, and professional growth
* Collaborating with approximately 12 to 14 Nurse Managers and Assistant Nurse Managers throughout the Medicine service line
This position is ideal for leaders who demonstrate humility, accountability, integrity, and responsibility while effectively building relationships and fostering a culture of professionalism. Candidates may come from Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse leadership, committee leadership, or other formal nursing leadership backgrounds.
