Grounds Worker

Full-time, 40 hours per week
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable and hardworking Grounds Worker to join our team. This role involves performing a variety of tasks to maintain cemetery grounds and assist with burial services. The ideal candidate will be flexible, possess reliable transportation, and have a strong work ethic.
Key Responsibilities
Burial Services:
- Assist in performing openings and closings for burials, entombments, and inurnments.
- Set up and tear down gravesites, including tents, chairs, and other equipment.
- Install outer burial containers and handle burial marker installations.
- Operate lawn care equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, and blowers.
- Dig graves, place headstones, haul dirt, and perform general landscaping tasks.
- Conduct 25-foot radius preparation for burials, ensuring the area is clean and neat.
- Fill graves, tamp, seed, or sod as necessary.
- Operate hand-held tools and equipment, including shovels, picks, rakes, sledgehammers, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, chain saws, and pumps.
- Operate mechanical equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, marker trailers, dump trailers, jackhammers, tampers, and backhoes.
- Adhere to all company safety rules and universal precautions.
- Handle and complete work orders from client families pertaining to individual grave and marker maintenance.
- Respond to and complete requests for service/work orders.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Complete Dignity training as assigned.
- Adhere to all standards of the Dignity Memorial Promise.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by management.
Experience:
- Minimum of six (6) months experience operating standard equipment.
- Ability to operate hand-held tools and equipment, including shovels, picks, rakes, sledgehammers, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, chain saws, and pumps.
- Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, marker trailers, dump trailers, jackhammers, tampers, and backhoes.
- Ability to accurately use measuring devices (e.g., tape measure, yardstick).
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with fellow associates, contractor personnel, and client families.
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
- Flexibility to work beyond standard hours as needed.
- Acceptable driving record and applicable license(s) to operate equipment/vehicles.
- Reliable transportation to travel between Charlottesville and Harrisonburg locations.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions.
- Physical demands include lifting, bending, and operating machinery.
- May require on-call availability for emergency repairs.
