The Beirne
B. Carter Center Immunology Research (CIC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applicants for a Laboratory Technician 1 or 2 to become a participating member of the Hahn and Sun laboratories. The incumbent will participate in research studying host‑pathogen interactions and chronic inflammatory disease and contribute to lab management. - Use experimental methods including handling mice, small tissue dissection, histology and immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cognitive performance, genotyping, and real‑time PCR.
- Work with students, post‑docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments.
- Perform lab management tasks including ordering and receiving, equipment service, and coordinate schedules for lab meetings and shared equipment.
- Ensure compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures and consult with the Principal Investigator regularly.
- Other duties may be assigned in addition to the above responsibilities.
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. A bachelor’s degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
- Education:
Associate’s degree. - Experience:
At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
- Preference for those with a degree in a related science field and prior lab experience.
- Self‑guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental and design challenges.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience working with laboratory animals.
This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals, as well as keyboarding and fine‑finger manipulation for bench work and animal procedures.
