Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Purow Laboratory in the Department of Neurology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory Specialist to join our collaborative and collegial team working on creative and novel strategies to treat lethal brain cancers. The position offers research experience and training under Dr. Benjamin Purow, a neuro-oncologist physician-scientist, and the goal is to contribute to original research and one or more publications.

The Purow Lab is a translational biomedical research team investigating exciting strategies for treating glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive brain cancer, but also aiming for broader impact. Our efforts focus on therapies with direct toxicity to glioblastoma cells but increasingly on immune-boosting treatments as well. The lab's foci include:

* Therapeutic combinations with inhibitors of diacylglycerol kinases for direct toxicity and immunotherapeutic activity against glioblastoma

* Synergistic combinations of existing drugs/agents, particularly repurposing available drugs in novel ways. This includes a unique combination of two over-the-counter agents that together boost immune cell activity, with potential applications within neuro-oncology but for many other applications outside it as well

* Local gene therapy approaches to boost the immune response against glioblastoma

We collaborate with other laboratories at UVA and elsewhere, and our laboratory is part of both the UVA Neurology Department and its NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Responsibilities

* Learn how to perform key experiments in one or more of our active research projects, then perform them independently

* Perform in vitro experiments with glioblastoma cell lines and models both in vitro and in vivo

* Perform co-culture experiments with glioblastoma and immune cells

* Collaborate with laboratory members and external collaborators

* Participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, and Cancer Center activities
