The Park Lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating genetic alterations in cancers. More information on the lab can be found here . The Lab Specialist will work closely with Dr. Park and other lab members to perform a set of experiments on a regular basis, which include animal related works (genotyping PCR, monitoring mouse colony and tumor-bearing mice), cell culture works, molecular biology works (plasmid cloning and transfection), and biochemical experiments (protein extraction and immunoblot) under the direction of principal Investigator.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:
  • Proficiency with the following techniques: mouse anatomy and primary tissue culture; molecular methods such as cloning, PCR, real-time PCR; transfection of transgene and shRNA; and biochemical methods such as western blot and protein extraction.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master basic computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Checking inventory of basic laboratory supplies
  • Maintaining cell culture daily and managing mouse colonies and genotyping of the colonies when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience:

    At least 1 year of relevant lab experience. May accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Master's degree
  • 3-5 years of experience
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $19.23/hour ($40,000 annually). commensurate with education and experience.

  • This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
  • This position will NOT support visa sponsorship.
  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
